Language levels, according to the CEFR international scale

A1 or beginner level

Learning a foreign language from scratch

I understand and can use familiar phrases and expressions necessary to carry out specific tasks.

I can introduce myself and others, ask questions and answer questions about my place of residence, acquaintances, and belongings.

I can participate in a simple conversation if the partner speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to help.

A2 or elementary level

Delving into the language and developing communication skills in everyday situations

I understand individual sentences and frequently used expressions related to basic areas of life: basic information about myself and my family members, shopping, and finding a job.

I can perform tasks related to simple information exchange on familiar or everyday topics.

In simple terms, I can talk about myself, my relatives and close friends, and describe the main aspects of everyday life.

B1 or intermediate level

The ability to maintain a conversation and understand the main content of texts

I understand the main ideas of clear messages made in literary language on various topics that typically arise at work, in studies, or during leisure time.

I can communicate in most situations that may arise while staying in a country where the language is studied.

I can compose a coherent message on familiar or particularly interesting topics.

I can describe impressions, events, hopes, aspirations, and present and justify my opinions and plans.

B2 or upper-intermediate level

The ability to communicate freely and logically on more complex topics

I understand the overall content of complex texts on abstract and concrete topics, including specialized texts.

I speak fairly quickly and spontaneously, allowing for continual communication with native speakers without significant difficulties for either party.

I can make clear, detailed statements on various topics and present my viewpoint on the main issue, demonstrating the advantages and disadvantages of different opinions.

C1 or advanced level

Deep understanding of the language and its nuances, including in professional and academic activities

I understand extensive complex texts on various topics and recognize hidden meanings.

I speak spontaneously at a fast pace, without difficulty in finding words and expressions.

I flexibly and effectively use the language for communication in scientific and professional activities.

I can create accurate, detailed, well-structured messages on complex topics, demonstrating mastery of text organization models, linking devices, and the integration of its elements.

C2 or native speaker level

The ability to express thoughts freely on any topic, understand nuances and cultural contexts of the language

I understand virtually any oral or written message and can compose a coherent text based on multiple oral and written sources.

I speak spontaneously at a high pace and with a high degree of accuracy, emphasizing nuances of meaning even in the most complex cases.
